Judith Buford - Naval Reservist and Medical Reviewer

What inspired you to join the military?

My family has a strong military history. My grandfather was killed in Pearl Harbor, my father retired from the Navy, my son was on active duty in the U.S. Navy, and my uncles and step-father were all members of the U.S. Army. After Sept. 11th, I decided to join the reserves to help this country move forward from the attack.

What are some of the key achievements or milestones in your career or during your time in the service that you are most proud of?

I joined the military at age 37. I was waivered in because I was a paramedic at the time they needed medical personnel. I went through boot camp and Field Medical Service School at age 38. Became a corpsman for a tank/LAV unit.

How do you use the skills you learned in the military?

I am currently a Medical Reviewer on the CMS CERT program. Some of the many skills I use from my time in the service are organization and time management- "being early is on-time" and respect for other humans.

Why is it important that we celebrate Veterans Day as a nation?

Remembering all those who sacrificed so many things. Being away from family births, deaths, birthdays, graduations, etc. is very hard on both the service member and their families.

How many years did you serve in the military?

Six years in the active reserves and two years in the inactive reserves as a Corpsman for a tank/LAV marine unit.

How do you recognize Veterans Day and Military Family Appreciation Month?

I say "thank you" to all who served whenever I can.
